    2013 Rio World Championships

Post by Jonesy on Thu Aug 29, 2013 5:43 pm

Despite all the troubles in the AJJF off the mat, it is wonderful to see Japan thriving on the mat, with gold after gold coming in Rio. Judo is at ts best when Japan is strong.

Completely agree with you. It's been some time that I haven't seen such attacking judo and fighting spirit in a major tournament.
Ebinuma almost lost both of his hands but that didn't stop him from finishing his opponents and Ono...well I saw him for the first time during the 2011 world junior championships. He has been nearly unstoppable ever since. He oozes self confidence you can see it when he walks towards the tatami same goes for Takato.

The hard part starts now with the middle and heavy weights. I don't think that they sent there best fighters in these divisions outside of Shichinohe (+100). It's a shame that both Takagi Haifan and Ryonosuke Haga got injured. Daiki Nishiyama seems to have disappeared from the surface (2 consecutive silver medals ) he has only lost to Illiadis during the world championships. Masashi Nishiyama isn't even the best Japanese -90 fighter that title has been owned by Kato for the last 3 years. Every time  I have seen him in competition he looked so disinterested.

Yeah too bad they didn't send Kato. Its been a while since the japanese men had a true sutemi and newaza specialist in the worlds. Would have been nice to see what he could do. I think they are giving Masashi one last shot, he'd be too old for 2016 and when the cycle begins in earnest.

Kato couldn't come. He wasn't able to get the day off from his boss, Inspector Clouseau.

The Japanese women are getting played by the referees. If I didn't know better I'd think that the IJF has something against them.

Interestingly enough some feel the success of Japanese men in 60 kg, 66 kg and 73 kg categories is a direct result of new contest rules implemented by the IJF. (The same IJF some feel is destroying Judo)

    Thoughts?

The IJF are destroying judo by eroding its technical base. There is much more to judo than what takes place on a mat at an IJF championship. The IJF seem not to realise that.

The mat etiquette has been awful. Most of the competitors only bow when they win.

I note your location and say that this not to reflect anything on you, but my observation throughout the course of the week has been that, as a group, the french woman are the most annoying. Dancing, giggling, frolicking off the tatami. I mean sure some of the other countries players may not be very up to it in this department as well but its particularly sad when you see it in such a judo rich country as the french.

My location is France but I'm actually Dutch. We all know the number of fiasco's Riner has caused in the past even but I have to admit that he has calmed down a bit (we will see how he reacts if he ever loses). The new French generation of Judokas are all about winning and most of the time they display no humility on the tatami outside of Ugo Legrand.

Well we saw how he reacted when he lost the 2010 Open weight final against Daike (fair enough though he should have won)

    +

And we all know the difference between being 20 and being 24.
Some of us even been in the 20s age, once upon a time. Not many of us at that age were alredy bi-world medalist and olimpic medalist yet some of us were probably worst than him in behaviour.
Deplorable, indeed, but seems there was hope for improvement.
