Hip Throw - pick up variation

Post by Ricebale on Sat Jan 19, 2013 2:19 pm

This is a capture the centre drill, capture the centre with the lead leg to lift then hip throw, this is the basic practice to begin learning this movement. Video made on the fly like all my stuff. The second movement he stepped off the hip pick up so that became a regular hip throw.

Easy to do one handed once you have the control, the theory is to get the drill movements then integrate them with the general practice against increasingly more resistant opponents.

I had a couple of guys today from a Judo club training, they had a preference for turning throws so I included this movement in the session. Moving forward into an attack with the hip throw was something they had not really seen before, especially the forward direction hip throw.

The movements shouldn't change too much for gi or no-gi and should be IJF friendly also Very Happy

(There is already a Judo name for this technique also)

    Enjoy and critique

That's a fairly standard trajectory for koshi guruma and tsuri goshi at my club.

Don't like the picking up thing but that's horses for courses

Seems like a good one-two with kani basami: you move in, he steps back and away, kb (or even a rolling kneebar)

The pick up is exaggerated a bit as its a drill, the one armed version I'm doing is closer, just enough to get the guy on his toes. Although I have seen the pick up version work well as a direct attack in mma as they tend to stand taller, I'm working this combo up to give me options, with a gi it should be easier as you grab the rear belt and step into a hip bump to lift.

I was doing my standard arches and the guys wanted a turning option so I opted for this, did it on vid so they could watch it at home before next practice.

The rolling knee bar would be easy, the kani would be a contra-counter, I'll make avid next class on those for fun, if you have access to a camare (iPhone i use) you should put one up, the free app "splice" on the iPhone does these vids.

    Cheers

The pick up variation you show reminds me of a few taichi style throws I've seen (and of course, sambo throws).

As for responding with video: I'd love to, but I'm still on crutches (just had ACL repair 4 weeks ago) :s

Except for it being right-handed ... straight out of the junokata!
