The Father of Judo - Kano shihan's biography, in English

Post by NBK on Fri Jul 31, 2015 4:27 pm

A great translation of the biography of Kano shihan, the founder of judo, by Brian Watson, a judo 4 dan and long term resident of Japan.  Highly recommended! A must have for any judoka's library, or anyone that wants insight into the history of judo and this complex, fascinating man.

Watson also wrote this very informative bio:

my sense from this excelent book

Post by noboru on Tue Jan 12, 2016 5:37 pm

I buyed the Kindle edition of book "The Father of Judo: A Biography of Jigoro Kano". I read it. Very nice, lot of informations about Kano and judo in his early years.

But the content of this book gives the general impression, that after year 1890 Jigoro Kano practised judo very little and his interest were
    - be good school teacher / principal
    - make better conditions for teachers in Japan
    - changes school curriculum in japanese education
    - help make good education for chinese people in Japan and in China
    - help of japanese sports and olympism in Japan
    - construct and lead olympic teams for different Olympic Games
    - bring Olympic games to the Japan

There are not more informations about Kano and his judo practice/teaching after year 1890. Kano looked like very very busy man. Jigoro Kano spent lot of time on his trips to Europe, North America etc. It were trips about 6 months etc. ... It looks like, that the main judo men after year 1890 were his pupils and they led judo in Kodokan and Japan and Kano sensei only supervised them from the far.
I think that CK noted the similar informations about Kano and his judo practice in his later years in other thread in this forum.

It was my sense from reading of this book. The book used lot of informations from newspapers. May be that it is the reason why there is not more infomations about him and judo practice after year 1890. This my sense could be wrong.

Kano shihan did not write it up (that would be an autobiography).

'Judo Memoirs...' is an edited and translated version of a long series of interviews that Kano shihan gave to a gent who wrote them up, then Judo magazine printed them in Japanese. It was Kano shihan's life according to Kano shihan, going through various aspects of his life.
