Passing of female judo champion Paulette Fouillet, 8th dan, ‘Grande Dame‘ of French judo

It is with great sadness that the French Judo Federation announced the passing away of Paulette Fouillet, at the age of 65. Mrs Fouillet was a ‘Grande Dame‘ of French Judo and a pioneer of women's judo. Paulette was promoted to 8th dan just 8 months ago in this way joining the small elite of female 8th dan holders worldwide (Only ten women [4 Japanese, 2 French, 3 British, 1 US] have ever made it to 8th dan, three of them have passed away).

Paulette was a national coach and technical advisor of the French Judo Federation, and dedicated her life to the development of sport. She was a former European champion and a double silver medal winner at the first world championships for women in New York 1980, where she ended second in the Open class after Belgian Ingrid Berghmans, and second in the +72kg after Italian Margerita de Cal.

The International Judo Federation announced on its website that the IJF and its President, Mr. Marius Vizer, present their deepest condolences to the French Judo Federation, and to the family and friends of Paulette Fouillet.
