WHat do we want from a judo forum.

Post by sodo on Wed Feb 06, 2013 8:05 pm

    Hi All,

we have a shiney new forum thanks to Dew and the admins and moderators, THANK YOU alien alien alien

The first couple of weeks were great, old friends and pure judo, great. even bjj was kept in the other martial arts/bjj section and some good posts resulted without the cr@p that we had in JF.
Unfortunately in the last week I have lost the lite and gone over to the dark side Twisted Evil because of BS postings about toe locks, neck cranking and "REAL" fighting comming into the judo techniques and yudansha sections.

Is this what we want? I know that I don't but then I am only one member here. I have no problem with the grapplers and LARP'ers posting in their own sections but we now (and only now) have the chance to keep the judo sections for what they are intended i.e. JUDO discussion.

An I the only one that feels that way ?

I think you are correct, indeed whilst I have interests in the other sections and there is some commonality between those things and Judo I have tried my best to keep my posts in the Judo section centred on and around Judo.

My definition of Judo is not limited to the Olympic version but even a heretic such as myself can tell the difference between Judo and other combat arts.

I read but don't contribute to the yudansha section, I can't see the value, which really by not posting there I am not detracting form the value I suppose Very Happy

Presumably this is the role of the moderators to move these discussion into other sections.

    Cheers

    That's the point,
1/ do we the posters want the mix threads?
2/ Does Tha Admin want to keep the Judo ond other threads seperate?
3/ Can they be kept seperate?
4/ can we as posters expect the Admin and Mods to do this (extra) work for us?

One of the things that I missed from the old forum was the new content side, which was my entrance to JF and a couple lead me into "Kiddies Korner". I now appreciate the forum structure here and can avoid the Larp and MMA threads.

I just get peed off when they follow me Very Happy

Agree to a certain extent. Admin should perhaps become more involved and strict in enforcing against thread-jacking and threads in wrong section. I do not mind all the debate but agree it should be in its place in the correct sub-forum

To be fair, I do feel that since things like atemi-waza and kani-basami are an acknowledged part of the original jûdô curriculum, intelligent discussions on and about these and similar topics should be allowed and even to a certain extent encouraged iff (not a spelling error; means "if and only if") the discussants are capable of partaking in e-judo in a gentlemanly fashion.

Posting about techniques or attitudes clearly violating the underlying principle of jita kyôei should be moved swiftly to the relevant sub-forum, for instance "Self Defence" or "MMA".

Any trolling, such as discussing "how much more awesomely effective judo would be if we could just front-kick to the groin as part of kuzushi for a throw" should either be in "Off Topic", or removed.

Most of us are here because we left the JF after Judo Sensei sold out and it became plagued with technical problems, overrun with intrusive advertising and infested with noxious trolls. Gimics to increase site activity such as belt grades and stars for posting may increase advertising $ and site value but what we were looking for was simply a forum dedicated to Judo.

There is another forum http://judo.forumotion.co.uk/ and it is styled as a forum dedicated to Kodokan Judo. And why not? There are already plenty of other forums for MMA, Jujitsu, TKD, etc

    The Makota Discussion section states:
Discuss anything related to Judo. To avoid unpleasant & irrelevant arguments we ask you to avoid discussing politics & religion. Racism or sexism will not be tolerated. BJJ vs Judo, Wrestling VS Sambo type threads will be deleted immediately and their authors required to do 10,000 Uchi Komis.

The Makoto Forum is distinctly different, We could all go there and let the Trolls have this forum to brag about their superior killing skills. cheers

I was a part of the other forum for quite some time and I enjoyed it there. I still visit from time to time. There was never any ridiculous discussion, nitpicking, back and forth arguments, ect... The topic was always about Judo and it worked well. Perhaps that approach should be utilized here.

Keeping forums troll- and off-topic free is an impossible mission.
Keeping a big judo forum strictly on judo, is the same.
    Forums always work like that.

I agree but is that a reason not to try? (that is fr the Mods to answer Very Happy)

Conversations often develope in unexpected directions, that is just the same in real life as on a forum. It is just that sometimes it goes OTT as it often did in JF and there it got to the point of being acceptable behavoir, my thoughts were that this forum is new and the culture can still be set. If trolls know that their posts willbe deleted than they tend not to post.

Please note that these are just my thoughts and wishes, if the Admin/Mods or the majority of the members are happy to have mixes threads than that is fine by me, just done get excited when I call a BS post for what it is Very Happy

I disagree. There was never an issue with trolls and off-topic posts on the other forum. If there are moderators it's easy to moderate a forum. Any B.S. posts just delete. No questions asked. Any topics that are going in a bad direction, just delete it and have the people involved continue the conversation privately. The other forum was managed quite well.

Completely agreed with you Sodo in regards to the trolls. The other forum never had a troll problem or had constant posts from idiots challenging Judo concepts and such because they were deleted immediately. People should stay on Bullshido if that's what they want.

    Hi Dave,

I don't want anybody getting the idea that I was knocking the old forum, I had a great time there Very Happy but I joined it relatively late compared to some members and certain ways had been established and a lot of tolerance was given to "sankyu sensie" of the bjj persuasion pale that just wanted to argue and as you know I just LOVE a real argument cheers. I just see the chance with a new forum to try and avoid some of the things that happened on JF, hell it was so pleasant only having serious posters here that I managed to stay "lite" for a whole month Twisted Evil even on the bjj threads and that was down to the fact that we only had posters that were serious about their sport/art. Obviously the longer the forum runs and the more popular it becomes the greater the danger of trolls.

I like Sodo-lite ... I think it would be fine if you just state your disagreement and then ignore the rest of the nonsense.

Sometimes I think Old-Sodo-style can actually inflame the situation and increases the amount of nonsense produced - not that you're writing nonsense, but I think that others write more nonsense in response to your arguments.

If someone writes something foolish about Kano's toe-locks etc... could you just state that you think they are talking nonsense and then decline to respond any further?

You've posted many worthwhile things in the past - I think your opinions have good standing on the forum.

    Thanks; I think scratch

I think that if some one is called out for BüllSh/tting then an explanation is needed as to why it is BS otherwise we could just resort to slanging matches. The problem arises when some one feels cornered and continues to BS (we all do it) instead of saying I was wrong.

I know that the good old sodo style peed some people off but it also got through to a lot of people who you would not have expected, take a look at my old friends list on JF and there were alot of the younger ones that I collided wound up on there. Many of the senior judoka were politcally correct and everthing a sensie should be be but they took alot of cr@p and got mobbed out and gave up. I'm still here Very Happy

People should realise that this is the net, things people say or write should not be taken so seriously. (a tipp look for smileys Laughing )

I'm afraid I've missed something here, you are going to have to name and shame because I have no idea who you are talking about, are there multiple trolls and derailers?

As far as I'm concerned the forum belongs to all of us and the responsibility is split, if there is a poster who is derailing a thread the first thing I would expect of myself or of you would be a polite reminder that said poster was posting in the wrong place and if that failed a PM to whatever mod was on at the time; to engage in an argument would be unhelpful.

There is already great diversity in the membership here so teething problems are to be expected, and we need to work together in ironing them out, so lets start with some details?

Firstly, I would say you are posting in the wrong sub forum! Laughing

Also, Dave, I'm not sure if you are joking about there being no trolls on the old forum? affraid

And we are seriously trying to avoid the mindset of deleting BS posts, rarely is a post strictly BS as seen by everyone and is usually subjective so a certain amount of leeway should be given.

I think this topic could prove a useful tool in trying to chisel away at this chunk of judo granite we have here, and will help us fashion the Venus de milo of a forum that we deserve. Smile

    Popularity Rules?

Post by Judo Dad on Thu Feb 07, 2013 9:41 am

Increased site activity equates to advertising $ and site value. The JF encouraged site activity in
many ways such as awarding belts and stars for frequent posting. Judo Sensei sold out the JF to a business that commercialised the site even more. The site was overrun with intrusive advertising and trolls. What I was looking for was simply a forum dedicated first and foremost to Judo.

There are already plenty of other forums for MMA, Jujitsu, TKD, etc. If decisions are to be made on popularity and MMA is the most popular topic, what then? Unless there is something out there I haven’t found, it looks like the Makoto forum http://judo.forumotion.co.uk/
is the only real choice if you are looking for a forum dedicated to Kodokan Judo

I think that it is best to start with posters trying to politely tell the "de-railer" that what they are posting is off topic. If this doesn't work let the original thread poster politely tell them. If that is to no avail, let the original thread poster tell one of the mods. Let them handle it how they see fit. Perhaps telling the poster, perhaps eliminating the posts.

I understand not wanting threads to get de-railed, we've already seen it happen, but at times there are people that think that what they are posting is relevant.

We all "live" here on this forum together...

frankly I derail more threads than many on here do, and I'm an admin for god sake!

the way I see it we have fun on here. many threads get derailed, but often not before the OP's question was answered. with that said, if you create a thread and don't like the direction it heads in, PM me. it gets forwarded to my email which gets forwarded to my phone. I have been really busy lately and haven't read every thread lately, in fact far from it. but if I get a PM I sign on as soon as possible to see if it's something important. and I have no problem being the bad guy and sorting things out the hard way if a bad guy is needed.

we have been trying to run this forum with the bare minimum amount of admin interference possible. and it's worked pretty well so far. if we need to step it up from "pretty much no interference" to "just a tiny bit of interference" as this forum grows, that's fine with me.

also Judo Dad, it looks kinda funny to have "please don't feed the trolls" right above the link to your club's webpage. I'm just saying...
