Jiji Press Two-time Olympic judo gold medalist Ryoko Tani, currently a lawmaker of the House of Councillors, will become the first female member of the All Japan Judo Federation’s board of directors, informed sources said Monday.

The appointment of Tani, 37, was to be decided at an extraordinary board meeting later Monday, according to the sources.
More than one woman is expected to join the board, the sources said.

The move is part of the scandal-hit federation’s efforts to reform itself based on proposals by a third-party panel that investigated violence by coaches against women judoka. In March, the panel proposed appointing women to the federation’s board.

In January, it came to light that 15 female judoka, including members of Japan’s national team for the 2012 London Games, had lodged a complaint with the Japanese Olympic Committee over violence and harassment by Ryuji Sonoda, then head coach of the national team, and others. Sonoda resigned as head coach in February.

Tani participated in five consecutive Olympic Games after women’s judo became an official Olympic event in the 1992 Barcelona Games. She won a gold medal in the 48-kilogram class in the 2000 Sydney Olympics and defended the title in Athens four years later.
She was elected to the upper house for the first time in 2010 and retired from judo the same year.
